When we first released World War Cthulhu: The Darkest Hour back in 2013, we announced that this was just the first setting in the World War Cthulhu line. Over the past year we’ve been hard at work on the wider World War Cthulhu setting, spanning conflicts throughout the whole of the 20th century (and beyond…), and we will be bringing it to Kickstarter in the spring.
In World War Cthulhu, the conflicts of the 20th century are all too real, but they are not the only conflicts. Another series of struggles takes place, unseen by most. Whilst the horrors and dangers of the battlefield are deadly, they are exceeded by that posed to humanity by the Cthulhu Mythos.
While the investigators may be armed and trained men and women, soldiers and spies fighting for their country, they will quickly find their weapons useless against creatures from beyond. This is a war that cannot be won by weapons alone. Scenarios are tense and thoughtful, horrifying in every sense of the word.
The first installment of World War Cthulhu, The Darkest Hour features a focused dual mission structure, where investigators are part of SOE, tasked by the mysterious Network N with both a military and a Mythos mission that they must accomplish. These missions might be at times contradictory to one another, or require hard choices to reach the best outcome in a desperate situation.
Who or what do you sacrifice to ensure that you are successful? Where do you draw the line?
As we reveal more of World War Cthulhu, you’ll see that these themes and structures will run through each of the settings we'll be bringing to the Kickstarter: World War One, An updated World War Two, Cold War and World War Three.
Whilst each of the individual settings can be treated as a standalone product, we’re also working on the keystone of the World War Cthulhu experience: An over-arching campaign that provides both a thematic and a historical link between them all, and (whisper it) perhaps a more direct link too.
With your help we hope to bring something truly special to Call of Cthulhu. Over the coming weeks we'll be revealing more about the wider World War Cthulhu setting and the forthcoming Kickstarter - keep an eye on the website for more information as we declassify it.
