What is Yggdrasill?

Yesterday we revealed the cover for the next Yggdrasill supplement, Uppsala, which will be available to pre-order soon.

But what is Yggdrasill? Well, it's our roleplaying game of exciting adventure in a mythical Scandinavia where the gods, monsters and worlds of Norse mythology are real, and in today's blog we thought we'd take a closer look.

In Yggdrasill you are a hero in the Scandia of legend – intrigue, combat, quests, magic and mythic creatures await! As heroes questing for adventure, glory or immortality, you’ll take part in great battles from the snowbound plains of Jylland to the courts of kings. If you achieve enough glory, perhaps you'll will be recognised by Odin himself and feast in Valhalla ahead of the Last Battle between the Giants and the Gods – Ragnarök itself!

Mercenary or hirdmen, berserker or noble, prophetess or sorcerer, fate will guide you through frozen fjords, deep seas and monster-haunted forests. Skalds will sing of your exploits for centuries to come!

The Setting

Yggdrasill is set in Scandia, the land of the three kingdoms of Denmark, Norway and Svithjod (modern-day Sweden), in the 5th century AD. It is set in the real world, but with the premise that all of Norse mythology is real – that our world, Midgard, is but one of the Nine Worlds that surrounds the world tree, Yggdrasill. Trolls and other fierce beasts lurk in the woods, there are duergar and alfar if you know where to find them, and there really is a realm of Giants and Gods.

You play Norse adventurers – Vikings, if you like – off to make your own legends and forge your own sagas. You might play a jarl, a noble in charge of your clan. You might play a berserker, a savage and formidable warrior fuelled by rage. Or you could play a volva, diviners and spellcasters who interpret omens and determine the fates of men.

Glory and riches await, for those bold enough to take them!

The System

Yggdrasill uses a quick and simple system, designed for fast-paced, exciting and heroic actions! It uses ten-sided dice – d10s – and each player will need between 5 and 10.

To make a test, a player rolls a number of d10 equal to his Characteristic. He then picks his two best results, adds them together along with a Skill and compares them to a target number (typically 14). If a 10 is rolled, the player may roll the dice again and add that to the total along with the 10.

There are two resources that a player may draw upon too: Fate and Furor. Norse heroes have a pool of strength and rage that they can draw upon to spur them onto greater deeds – this is their Furor pool, and they may expend it to roll extra dice in a test. Each character has a Fate, too, and if an action is linked to this somehow they may keep three dice, not just two.
