What is Kuro?

Yesterday we revealed the cover for the next Kuro supplement, Kuro Tensei, which will be available to pre-order soon.

But what is Kuro? Well, it’s our roleplaying game of futuristic, Japanese-style horror. Think cyberpunk combined with ghost stories. It’s dark, scary stuff, and in today’s blog we thought we’d take a closer look.

Kuro is a horror roleplaying game set in Japan 40 years in the future. You play ordinary civilians caught up in a mysterious event that has caused spirits and monsters to return to the world. As the story unfolds, you find out that there is more to your involvement than mere coincidence.

Kuro is a developing game, which means that the story and the setting grows as you play through the campaign contained in the Core Rulebook and the two supplements, Makkura and Kuro Tensei.

The Setting

The year is 2048, and something dark has returned to Japan. With an international blockade set up around the beleaguered country, there is no escape. To ignore the horror will only delay the inevitable, but do you have the strength to face the nightmares?

Kuro is a developing game setting that mixes a dark near future with unremitting Japanese horror. The first supplement, Makkura, follows as events continue to unfold in the aftermath of the Kuro incident.

The System

Tasks in Kuro are handled by rolling a number of six-sided dice equal to a characteristic (Strength, Reflexes and so on) and comparing the total to a target number based on the difficulty of the task. A skill may add a bonus to the total. A roll of 6 on any die allows you to roll another die to add to the total.

Be warned: Shi (4) is also the word for Death, so any die that rolls a 4 is ignored for fear of angering the spirits!

In combat, the amount that a character beats his opponent by is added to the base damage for the weapon type. Normally, damage is simply deducted from the victim’s hit point total, but if a character takes too much damage in a single blow then she suffers a ‘wound’ that penalises her future dice pools.

Kuro Core Rulebook

The best place to start your own game of unremitting, futuristic horror is the Kuro Core Rulebook, which contains all the rules and background you need to play the game. It also contains seven complete archetypes ready-to-play and a complete adventure, which also starts off an epic campaign that runs through all the books in the series.

Kuro is a 208-page hardcover book with black and white interior. Kuro is available to buy from all good game stores, as well as from our webstore. It is also available as a PDF download.

There is one supplement already available for Kuro too - Makkura - with the final part of the series, Kuro Tensei, on its way!

Makkura is a campaign of six full adventures for Kuro, the roleplaying game of near-future Japanese horror. Each adventure is linked together with several additional scenarios, taking you to the next level of the Kuro saga. Secrets will be revealed, spirits awoken and terrible enemies will prowl the streets of Shin-Edo.

Makkura is a 128-page softcover book with black and white interior. It will be available to buy in all good game stores soon, and is available for pre-order and PDF download now.

Kuro Tensei

Kuro Tensei is the forthcoming final part of the Kuro saga, following on from the gripping climax of Makkura. In it, the characters find themselves changed, able to wield strange new powers. And they'll need them too, for their foes - vile Oni and tainted Yokai - now face them openly, in numbers and strength greater than ever before!

You can find a whole selection of downloads for Kuro here, from blank character sheets and ready-made archetypes, to a free adventure. Check out the previews of the Kuro Core Rulebook below:
