When designing the second edition of Doctor Who: The Card Game, one of the things we knew we wanted to include was a variant for playing the game with two players. While it’s great to be able to play a game with three or four of your mates, there are times when there’s just the two of you.

Fortunately, we didn’t have to make many adjustments to make the game play seamlessly with just two players. First up, you remove a handful of cards that require a third player (Davros, the Chameleon Arch, that sort of thing), then you start playing exactly as you normally would.

Secondly, at the end of your go, you have to hand 2 cards to your opponent (instead of 3), and then draw back up to 5 as normal. This has the effect of increasing the flow of cards, and keeping the cards you hand your opponent a little unpredictable.

If anything, the two-player variant is a much faster, frenetic affair. If you’ve already got a copy of the first edition, why not download the new rulebook and have a go with the two-player variant yourselves. And if you’ve pre-ordered the second edition, hopefully you won’t have long to wait now – we’re expecting it to be with you in November.

05 Doctor Who Card Game Spread

We launched the pre-order for the new edition of Doctor Who: The Card Game yesterday - you can find out more about that here. We've had lots of people asking us about the game, so today we thought we'd answer some of the most frequently asked questions about it!

Frequently Asked Questions

What sort of game is Doctor Who: The Card Game?

Doctor Who: The Card Game is a fast, fun card game about saving the universe from the Doctor’s enemies. You can read a more thorough description of how the game works here.

Who can I play?

Everyone plays as the Doctor and his companions, defending time and space from the incursions of the Doctor’s enemies. At the same time, you are sending incursions of enemies to attack the other players!

Can I play with 2 players?

Yes, we’ve added a variant set of rules so you can play with just 2 players! Or use the regular rules and play with 3 or 4.

What’s different about the second edition?

Doctor Who: The Card Game second edition features the same great game as the first edition. We’ve tidied up some of the rules text and put in some more examples. There are rules for playing with 2 players, too.

More importantly, we’ve added in loads of new cards, from the Ninth and Tenth Doctors to Rose and Martha, Clockwork Robots to Ironsides and a whole bunch of new locations, like Royal Hope Hospital (now on the surface of the Moon).

You can download the new rulebook here and see just a few of the new cards here.

I already own the first edition – do I need to buy the second edition?

Of course not! Your game will still be just as much fun as it always has been. If you want to carry on playing you can do just that – in fact, you can download the new rulebook here, if you like.

If you want a host of new cards, including new Doctors, companions, locations and enemies, then it’s well worth picking up the second edition too.

Can I combine both editions?

Yes, you can just shuffle both decks together into one super deck (for an extra long game), or pick and choose your favourite enemies, locations and characters from both. The two editions have different card backs, so you can easily sort them out again when you’re done, but this won’t stop you combining them. You can read more about doing this here.

Is my favourite Doctor in the new edition?

If your favourite Doctor is the Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh or even Twelfth, then the answer is yes!

Can I still blow up the Dalek Flagship with a Jammy Dodger?

But of course! It’s our favourite trick. You can also turn the tide of battle with an Ironside or escape in the Valiant when the going gets tough, and many more new tricks besides!

I’m new to all this but I love Doctor Who. Will I still enjoy this game?

Yes! Doctor Who: The Card Game is designed to be accessible by anyone ages 13 to 1300, whether they’ve played a card game or not.

I’ve not watched much Doctor Who. Will I still enjoy this game?

It’s still a fun, tactical card game, regardless of whether you’re an avid fan of the show or not. Of course, you’ll get more out of it if you have watched the show, but you don’t need to be an expert to play (and win!) – maybe you’ll enjoy it so much you’ll go and watch some more episodes?

Just before we headed off to GenCon, we received a very exciting package in the post: the print proofs for the new edition of Doctor Who: The Card Game! This was our first chance to handle the box – as well as the new counters and rulebook – as well as to see all the cards on a single sheet. Some of you might even have been lucky enough to get a sneak peek at GenCon (and share in our excitement), but for the rest of you here’s a look:

Doctor Who Print Proofs

The second edition of the Origins Award-winning Doctor Who: The Card Game is coming out in the next few months, featuring the same great game from Martin Wallace along with new card art and variant rules for playing with two players.

You can read more about the new edition in this series of previews, or see the new card art we’ve revealed so far below.

5Jun/14Off

We’re looking ahead to the release of the second edition of Doctor Who: The Card Game later in the summer with a series of previews. For today’s preview, we thought we’d show you a page from the new rules booklet, showing the game in play.

DoctorWhoCardGameExampleofPlay1200

As you can see from the page preview, each player plays different Location cards in front of him. He can then play Defender cards to protect his own Locations, or play Enemy cards to attack his opponent's Locations. Where both Defenders and Enemies are present, a conflict ensues. At the end of the game, whoever controls a Location gets Victory Points – the winner of the game is the player with the most Victory Points!

Monsters

There are a number of new Enemy cards shown on the example of play, we thought we’d show you them up close – a new illustration of the Master, as well as the Toclaphane, the Vashta Nerada and everyone’s favourite Clockwork Robots.  Card art by Scott Purdy and Jon Hodgson.

One of our aims with Doctor Who: The Card Game Second Edition was to broaden its scope, bringing in characters and locations from other incarnations of the Doctor. In today’s card preview, we thought we’d show you some of the characters who accompanied the Tenth Doctor on his adventures, and who can now feature in your games too.
DoctorWhoCardGamePreview5_1200

As you can see, we’ve not only got a card for the Tenth Doctor, but also each of his companions: Rose Tyler, Martha Jones and Donna Noble.

We also had to include the Tenth Doctor’s last companion, Wilf, who plays a rather important role as a support card, increasing the number of cards you can save from turn to turn.

16May/14Off

One of the questions we’ve been asked the most since announcing the second edition of Doctor Who: The Card Game is whether the cards from the new edition can be combined with the old edition, so we thought we’d answer that in today’s post!

Cardbacks

As you can see from the cards above, we’ve taken the opportunity with the new edition to update the card backs with new designs incorporating the current Doctor Who logo. What this means, of course, is that the card backs don’t match the card backs from the first edition.

But don’t let this stop you from shuffling the two editions together, either to make one über-deck, or by cherry picking your favourite cards from both sets. The way the game and the cards are played remains the same, so cards from both editions can be played side by side, and knowing whether a card comes from first or second edition doesn’t provide anyone with an advantage in game.

This allows you to create some great combinations in the game, to capture the feel of even more of your favourite episodes. Another of our favourite episodes is Victory of the Daleks, from series 5, which you can recreate using the London, 1941 and Daleks card from the original set, alongside the Daleks and  Ironsides cards from the new set!

One of the fun things about Doctor Who: The Card Game is playing the characters, monsters and locations from your favourite episodes. One of our favourite episodes is Cold War from series 7, so we thought we’d showcase some of the cards inspired by it!

DoctorWhoCardPreview3

As well as a Defender card for Clara Oswald, those of you familiar with the first edition of the game will notice that we’ve got a new card for the Eleventh Doctor too.

The reappearance of the Ice Warriors after many years was one of our favourite bits about the episode, so we had to include them in the new edition of the game.
